Keynote

"Experiencias de un viaje espacial y perspectivas"

Se tituló de Ingeniero en Comunicaciones y Electrónica en la Facultad de Ingeniería de la UNAM. Hizo su Maestría en Sistemas de Telecomunicaciones en la Universidad de Essex, Inglaterra, y posteriormente recibió su Doctorado de la Universidad de Birmingham, también en Inglaterra, en el área de Electromagnetismo Aplicado. Fue becario del Consejo Británico y del CONACYT de México para realizar estos estudios.

En 1985 fue seleccionado para convertirse en el primer astronauta de México y primer representante de un país latinoamericano en una misión de la NASA. Orbitó la Tierra 109 veces, en el transbordador espacial Atlantis y durante la misión se colocaron tres satélites de comunicaciones en órbita. Realizó diversos experimentos y un extenso trabajo de fotografía de la superficie terrestre. Además de su experiencia con la NASA, el Dr. Neri Vela colaboró posteriormente, en 1989 y 1990, con la Agencia Espacial Europea, en Holanda, en el proyecto de la Estación Espacial Internacional, misma que actualmente ya está en órbita alrededor de la Tierra.
